Our Favourite ARTsy Halloween Costumes of All Time
This spooky season we’ve been looking back at our favourite ART-inspired Halloween looks and collectors. Namely Beyoncé as the magnificent Frida Kahlo and Jay Z as bad boy of the 1980s art scene, Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The art collecting power couple paid a Halloween homage to their intense love of fine art back in 2014 and it’s a love affair we can’t get enough of!
"What I find in the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat I search for every day in music. His art is musical, his broad strokes, he is lyrical and raw.” - B
The pair have made subtle (and not so subtle) references to art history throughout their work. From Jay Z’s Picasso Baby ft. performance artist Marina Abramovic to the Carters’ music video for joint single Apesh*t, walking among the world’s most prestigious artworks in the Louvre.
Not forgetting how they elevated the humble Art Selfie to a Vogue-worthy global trend, when Awol Erizku (photographer of that pregnancy announcement) captured them in front of the iconic Mona Lisa.
The couple have a substantial art collection estimated at $70 million by Forbes, reportedly owning numerous pieces by Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Basquiat (bien sur), Ed Ruscha, Laurie Simmons and more. Eagle-eyed fans also spotted work by David Hammons and Richard Prince in the background of Beyonce’s 7/11 video (filmed at their Tribeca apartment).
If those price tags have you spooked, any art consultant would advise keeping an eye out for some of the lesser known artists they shout about. Needless to say, any emerging artist that Jay and Bey so much as whisper the name of is catapulted into the art world stratosphere. In recent years, the Carters have been spotted admiring the work of emerging artist Sadie Barnette behind closed doors. Take note for your own art collection.
So whether Basquiat has you howling at the moon or feeling love at first bite, this weekend we’ll be sitting down with a glass of (blood) red wine & all the themed snacks to watch some seriously entertaining (and educational) biopics, Frida (2002) & Basquiat. What are your go-to movies at this time of year?
Wishing you all of the treats with none of the tricks, friends.
