Joan ill

Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain 1954
Joan Ill is undoubtedly one of the most interesting figures of the contemporary painting tradition in Catalunya and wider Spain. Deeply connected with Catalan coastal landscapes and their iconic beaches, cliffs and plants, his work is a contemplative homage to his native land.

Departing from more traditional painting techniques, his work integrates different elements and methodologies: from landscape photography and his well-known transparent canvases, to hand-made sewing processes with which he ties together pieces of fabric, and wood stretchers turned into windows that frame re-imagined natural scenery.

About The Artist:

Joan Ill began his artistic career in the 80s, after studying art and interior design at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios of Barcelona. He quickly became identified as an informalist and is aligned with the neo-expressionists of the decade.

Today, Joan Ill’s main interest is centered around the limits of painting, highlighting transparency above everything. Remaining loyal to the concept of the window, the frame is a route to enigmatic universes and increasingly poetic spaces, while at the same time expressing a close link with his own native territory.

Among his outstanding compositions, we find photographic images intermingled with the transparencies of pixelated, treated and sometimes painted fabrics, together with the traditional stitching of the fabrics.

His works are in public and private collections in Spain, Germany, France, Sweden, Italy, United Kingdom, USA, Venezuela and Lebanon. Joan Ill has participated in fairs such as ARCO Madrid, Arte Cologne, KunstRai Amsterdam, LOOP Barcelona and Beirut Arte Fair.
